Core Web Vitals: A Practical Guide to LCP, INP, and CLS
Improve real-user website performance with practical steps for LCP, INP, and CLS, plus a measurement plan that goes beyond a single Lighthouse score.

Core Web Vitals measure important parts of the browsing experience: how quickly the main content appears, how responsive interactions feel, and how stable the layout remains. The current metrics are Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint, and Cumulative Layout Shift. Use them alongside business outcomes and reliability data when planning performance work.
Measure real visitors and representative pages
Google's good thresholds are LCP at or below 2.5 seconds, INP at or below 200 milliseconds, and CLS at or below 0.1, assessed at the 75th percentile. Segment measurements by mobile and desktop, page type, and meaningful user journeys. A home page result says little about a slow product configurator.
Lab tools help reproduce problems, while field measurements reveal what users experience across devices and networks. A single Lighthouse score is a diagnostic snapshot. Establish a baseline, identify the affected interactions, and check whether an optimisation improves real sessions after release.
Fix the cause behind each metric
For LCP, identify the actual largest element. Prioritise its image or text dependencies, reduce server delays, and avoid hiding critical content behind unnecessary client-side work. Compress hero images and serve appropriate dimensions. Do not lazy-load the image that users need immediately.
For INP, investigate long tasks and expensive event handlers. Break up work, reduce unnecessary re-renders, and keep immediate feedback responsive. For CLS, reserve image and embed space, stabilise font loading, and avoid inserting banners above content without a planned layout. Each metric has a different failure mode.
Make performance part of delivery
Set budgets for key page types and review third-party scripts. Analytics, chat widgets, and marketing tags can add significant work, so measure their impact before and after installation. Include slower devices in testing instead of assuming a developer laptop represents the audience.
Performance supports usability and can contribute to search page experience, but it does not replace useful content or guarantee rankings. Monitor conversion and task completion as well as technical metrics. Keep a small backlog of observed bottlenecks and assign owners so improvements survive later feature releases.
What to follow before development
- Measure field data at the 75th percentile by device type.
- Identify the LCP element and avoid lazy-loading it.
- Trace slow interactions before rewriting components.
- Reserve media dimensions and audit third-party scripts.
A practical example
A storefront has a fast server response but a late-loading hero image. The team reduces the image size, gives it priority, and removes a blocking script. They then monitor product-page field data and checkout completion. A better lab score is encouraging; the release decision depends on whether visitors actually see and use the page sooner.

Frequently asked questions
- Does a perfect Lighthouse score guarantee good SEO?
- No. Lighthouse is a lab diagnostic. Search visibility also depends on crawlability, relevance, content quality, and other signals; real-user performance must be measured separately.
